Parent Consultation & Family Support

Time to think through what’s happening at home with someone who works with children every day. Your child doesn’t need to be a client — sometimes the most useful change is in how the adults respond.

You don’t need the right words to start

Most people arrive with something closer to a feeling than a diagnosis. If any of these sound close, that’s enough.

“I’m unsure how to respond to the behaviour.”

“Nothing I’ve tried seems to work anymore.”

“Parenting feels exhausting right now.”

“I’m worried about my child’s wellbeing.”

“My co-parent and I see things differently.”

“We’re parenting across two cultures.”

What to expect

How the work actually goes

01

We look underneath the behaviour

Rather than starting with consequences, we work out what the behaviour is communicating — and what’s driving it.

02

Temperament, development, environment

Strategies account for who your child actually is and what’s going on around them, not a generic age bracket.

03

Approaches that fit your family

Including your culture and values. What works in one household can be impossible in another, and that’s worth naming.

04

Two or three things to try this week

You leave with something specific and small enough to actually do, then we review what worked and adjust.

Questions

The things people ask first

Does my child need to be seeing you?

No. Parent consultation stands on its own. Many families start here — sometimes the most effective change is in how the adults around a child respond, and that can happen without the child attending at all.

Can both parents attend?

Yes, sessions are for one or two parents or caregivers. Coming together is often especially useful when you and your co-parent see the situation differently.

What if we disagree on parenting?

That’s a common and workable reason to come. The goal isn’t to decide who’s right, but to find an approach you can both actually carry out — consistency between adults usually matters more than the specific method.

Is this available online?

Yes. Parent consultation is available in person in Richmond or online anywhere in British Columbia.

Can you speak with my child’s school?

Where it would help and with your consent, yes. Coordinating with schools and physicians was a large part of my public mental health work. Written letters or reports are booked separately as clinical documentation.
